This costume is the culmination of over a year's worth of brainstorming, planning and finally putting it all together to make an actual costume. This is my creative version of the World of Warcraft boss, Al'ar the Phoenix God. It was meant to be shown at BlizzCon 2009 til I sprained my ankle the weekend before the convention and wasn't able to cosplay. I was very disappointed but I'm happy I got it finished finally.
Wings: Made of 1/2" PVC pipe (frame), and a TON of individually hand cut craft foam feathers covered in fabric and glued together.
Wig: Bought it on eBay for about $25, just had to style it with some hairspray.
Sleeves: The sleeves in this picture aren't the ones I originally made for the costume, but I moved a couple weeks before the picture was taken and I couldn't find them anywhere, so I had to make another set, and due to time constraints, I had a friend's mom help me out with them so I could get them done faster.
Phoenix Breastplate: This is my own design and made entirely out of 15oz vegetable tanned cowhide. I drew the design by hand, traced it onto the leather, cut it out, then carved, tooled, and painted all the details by hand. The paint is metallic acrylic and I used a dry brush technique to get the colors to blend together so nicely, then sealed it in acrylic sealer. After the paint was set, I put scores of crystal rivets all over it to make it glimmer in the dark.
Skirt: Made of cowhide and material
Shoes: A crazy perfect find at a going-out-of-business shoe shop in a mall. They are PlayBoy brand.
All designs were from my own imagination and all work was done by me except for a small piece on each wing that a friend helped me finish while I worked on another piece, and the sleeves.
This costume was debuted at RAW Artists/Graffiti Beach's art showcase on 7/22/10 along with most of my other costumes. I was the featured artist for the night and my costumes all seemed to be very well received, which was really amazing.
This and all my other costumes are for sale, so if you are interested, please contact me about pricing. For anyone who is local, I will be in the Oceanside, CA area until the beginning of October, so if you want to arrange some kind of pick up, it will need to be before then.
